Gymage is just one of the rooftop bars in Madrid with spectacular views of the city

Summer is upon us and with it comes an absolutely necessity to enjoy the sun at all times, preferably sitting on a rooftop terrace with a nice cold drink. Madrid is full of amazing rooftops with bars, restaurants and even pools that will make your summer life a lot more enjoyable.

Some are a bit difficult to spot or are hidden inside hotels, so we have selected the very best rooftop bars and restaurants in Madrid in an easy guide to help you find them.

Rooftops in Gran Vía and Sol

The Mint Roof: This intimate rooftop on the Gran Vía, gives you a glimpse of Madrid’s iconic architecture while you enjoy a chilled beach vibe sipping on cocktails served from a vintage-style looking food truck.

Make sure you experience their “Tardeo”, from Thursday to Saturday, that invites you to enjoy their “la hora fresca” (“the fresh hour”), a ritual that occurs just when the evening falls, enjoying THE Mint cocktail and the “tapa del día”.

Ático 11: This rooftop bar, atop the Iberostars Las Letras Hotel, provides views of the Gran Vía, Cibeles and beyond. With wood panelling, designer chairs, beautiful people and elegant cocktails, this is the place to be.

If you want to grab a bite while enjoying the view, the restaurant has great lunch and supper options. Make sure you drop by for a sunset drink.

El Jardín de Salvador Bachiller: This secret garden hidden in a designer leatherware shop offers you a relaxing oasis just a short walk from Sol. It doesn’t have the best views of the city, but you can relax, have a great brunch or a piece of cake, recharge your batteries and maybe even do a little bit of shopping.

Gymage: This Ibiza-style chillout zone has an infinity pool, cocktail bar and fake grass that make you feel like you are in a resort destination. If you look across, though, you’ll see the bustling Gran Vía and Malasaña to the South.

This health club-like centre also offers you a restaurant, hotel, shopping area, a gym and a theatre.

Rooftops in Barrio de Las Letras

The Roof at me: This is one of Madrid’s most exclusive terraces. Low lighting, waitresses who look like supermodels and a strict door policy in one of the city’s most beautiful squares, Plaza Santa Ana, opposite the Royal Theatre.

If you are looking for VIP treatment and exclusive and expensive cocktails, you need to check this rooftop out.

Tartan Roof on top of the Círculo de Bellas Artes: This is one of the most iconic rooftops in Madrid from where you can see the Gran Vía, the famous Metropolis sign and beautiful Art Deco rooftops.

You have to pay around 4 euro just to go upstairs but the price is definitely worth it. Hang around on its comfortable lounge chairs, relax and have a cocktail while looking at Madrid’s skyline. If you really don’t want to leave, the Tartan Roof offers a delicious dinner menu.

Hotel NH Collection Madrid Suecia: This is the perfect place to hide if you don’t want to face the queues to the neighbouring rooftop at Bellas Artes. With far fewer people and many spaces to sit and relax, you can enjoy a stunning sunset.

Looking out you can see the Palacio Cibeles, the green of the Retiro park and the terracotta buildings of the Barrio de Las Letras.

La Terraza del Urban in the Hotel Urban: This rooftop bar is located at the top of the art deco-inspired Hotel Urban. The vibe is very elegant, and this is a great place for a summer evening cocktail.

From here you can see a bit of Sol, the Spanish parliament and the skyline of the heart of the city.

Mirador Madrid at Centro Centro: The former Post Office building is now the City Hall complete with exhibition spaces and a rooftop bar.

This terrace is another rival to the nearby Tartan Roof with views that stretch onto the Cibeles Fountain, the Banco de España, the famous Paseo del Prado and the Paseo de la Castelana.

Enjoy a walk in the Retiro Park and refuel here, with great drinks and amazing sights.

Rooftops in Chueca

Mercardo San Antón: Located in one of Madrid’s best gourmet indoor markets, this rooftop terrace allows you to enjoy delicious bites with your drinks while gazing out into the narrow streets of Chueca. The space is decorated with low, comfy chairs and sofas, high tables and stools and the vibe is very chilled and low key. The perfect setting for a drink or two… or even three! Another plus is the price: compared to other rooftops the cocktails are very reasonably priced.

Hotel Oscar: If you are looking for luxury and all-white, Bauhaus-style decorations then this place is for you. Atop the Oscar you can marvel at the views of the Gran Vía and the iconic Telefonica building while siting poolside in an urban oasis.

Get your sunset outfits ready because this is where the chill-out party is at.

Rooftops in La Latina

The Hat: This rooftop bar might be on top of a hostel, but this is the hippest rooftop in Madrid, with tattooed waiters, great music and cocktails served in jam jars.

Hidden in a side street of Plaza Mayor, it looks overs La Latina and the impressive domes of the barrio’s churches. If you’re lucky enough to find a seat (it’s quite small and always full of people), be sure to order their amazing tapas and fresh drinks that will make you long for an endless summer.

El Viajero: El Viajero looks over some of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in La Latina, like the San Francisco and San Andreas churches.

If you can get a table at this very famous rooftop terrace, make sure you ask for their mojito, some tapas and just enjoy a summer afternoon in a chilled atmosphere with a gorgeous green background.
