Today we're celebrating a "green" success story in Spain's Canary Islands, showing that resorts can be comfortable and luxurious, with low energy consumption and able reduce emissions of harmful gases into the atmosphere. This is the success story of Nivaria Beach, a luxury eco-resort in Tenerife that saves CO2 by not using air conditioning. This is why it is the hottest holiday resort among eco-travellers right now.
"The choices we make must serve sustainability on a day-to-day basis. The key is to define the objective and priorities, and not to deviate from the path at any stage of the project. From the choice of the location to building the complex, to the choice of the soap in the bathrooms of the rooms: everything must be aligned in the same direction," says Kepa Apraiz, CEO of Kategora, the company responsible for the Nivaria Beach project in Tenerife.
"This is how we have achieved an excellent score on Booking while at the same time doing our bit to prevent global warming," adds Apraiz. As small as it may seem, all the choices have played their part in achieving this saving of 66,184 kilos of CO2 in one year. To begin with, the design of the complex has been studied in detail.
The orientation of the building takes advantage of the natural air flow in the area, which has been used in the flats to generate a very pleasant cross ventilation system, both day and night, without the need for air conditioning, a detail that the guests are very grateful for. They have also prioritised the use of "Km 0" materials and the use of local suppliers. The building has photovoltaic panels to heat the water and they use the water from the showers to irrigate the endemic Tenerife plants that they have selected, not only for their beauty, but also because they are the best adapted to a dry climate.
A secret corner for lovers of tranquillity
Nivaria Beach is a complex of 116 flats and 6 villas located on the seafront in the area of Abades, in the municipality of Arico, one of the least exploited locations for tourism in Tenerife.
It opened its doors in the middle of the pandemic and was the refuge of professionals with the capacity for teleworking and the rising trend of digital nomads. Today, it is a popular holiday destination for national and international tourists looking to connect with nature, spend time doing outdoor sports all year round and relax. It has a bike centre for cycling enthusiasts, offers yoga and pilates classes, has a gourmet shop with local produce, heated swimming pools and a gym.
The flats have a terrace, equipped kitchen and contemporary furnishings; the design of the complex, both in its communal and private areas, exudes a hedonism without stridency, luxury that respects the balance and harmony with the natural environment.
Forthcoming projects following the same philosophy
The first anniversary of the inauguration of Nivaria Beach coincides with the construction licence for Kategora's second project on the island of Tenerife. On this occasion, it is a new resort located in the area of "Amarilla" in the south of Tenerife, in San Miguel de Abona, a privileged enclave where, following in the wake and success of the previous project, a complex of 88 flats has been designed with maximum comfort and minimum environmental impact.
