In short; landlady holds deposit unrightfully while claiming to have proof. Proof requested, now we get ignored. Gave her 2 deadline, ample of time. Where can we turn now? We are not in Spain. We do have N.I.E. The rent was a regular tenancy, not holiday even though it was only for 6 weeks and meant for holiday.

Hi Suzanne, in case it still helps: in Spain the landlord has one month after you return the keys to give back the fianza (art. 36 LAU). If she keeps it for damages she must prove them with photos, invoices or a quote.
Send a burofax (you can do it online from the Correos website, it works from abroad) asking for the money or itemised proof within 10 days, or you'll go to court. Also ask where she lodged the deposit, since most regions require it and many landlords don't.
If you live in the EU, the European Small Claims Procedure covers up to 5.000 €, in writing, with no lawyer. And keep any dated photos from the day you left, that's usually what decides it.
